Discover Flatbush
Flatbush traces its roots to one of Brooklyn’s original six towns, though its modern boundaries can be hard to define. Some see it as more than a neighborhood—an entire sub-region that includes Ditmas Park and Prospect Lefferts Gardens. While most of its buildings date back to the early 20th century, Flatbush has a deep history, with landmarks like the Reformed Dutch Church (built in the 1790s) and Erasmus Hall, the city's oldest high school building. The neighborhood has also produced notable figures across music, politics, literature, and film. Adding to its rich cultural fabric is a vibrant section along the avenue filled with a niche variety of Caribbean restaurants and markets, reflecting the strong West Indian influence in the community. Even the legendary Brooklyn Dodgers once called Flatbush home, playing at Ebbets Field—though today, that site falls within Crown Heights, a reminder of the area's ever-evolving identity.
